Summer’s a fine time for al fresco drinking and dining, and it’s even better when you can include your canine cohorts. Dog Restaurant Week, which is July 21-26 in Louisville, is a way to get that precious patio time in and help local animal charities in the process.
Sponsored by Tito’s Vodka for Dog People, the celebration of food and dogs includes three local restaurants with pup-friendly patios: Garage Bar, Saints Pizza and Pub, and Difabio’s. Each one will have a special menu of healthful dog treats they can enjoy while you have a cocktail or a meal.
A portion of proceeds from select cocktails and dog treats will be donated to local dog charities, which have been paired up with specific restaurants.
Garage Bar, located at 700 E. Market St., will serve Watermelon Pup-cicles made with pureed watermelon and coconut milk, frozen into popsicle form. For humans, featured cocktails are Yellow Lab-ender, Hair of the Dog, and the Greyhound. The beneficiary of these sales go to Pit Bulls of St. Francis, a local rescue.
At Saints, 131 Breckenridge Lane, dogs can chow down on a Pooch Plate, a beef or chicken rice bowl with sides of carrot, spinach and sweet potato. Featured cocktails are Hair of the Dog, the Greyhound, and the Mutt Mule, and the animal charity is the Kentucky Humane Society.
And at DiFabio’s, located at 2311 Frankfort Ave., dogs can enjoy GRR-Roto, which is steamed brown rice with a choice of slow-cooked chicken or beef with carrots and peas. Featured cocktails are Hair of the Dog, an Italian Greyhound and the American Mutt, and the chosen charity is The Arrow Fund.
Dog Restaurant Week was founded last year in Austin, Texas, and this year spreads to Louisville, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Locally, it is sponsored by Tito’s Vodka for Dog People and local publication Edible Louisville & the Bluegrass.
