Bourbon break: 37 Louisville bars and restaurants celebrate Negroni Week through Sunday

Both the Mint Julep and the Old Fashioned have had their day in the sun already this year, so now it’s time for a brief bourbon respite to focus on the Negroni, a cocktail made with gin, Campari and vermouth. It’s the focus of an international effort called Negroni Week, which helps spread awareness of the classic cocktail and also raise funds for charities all over the world.

In fact, since its beginning in 2013, Negroni Week has raised more than $2 million thanks to 10,000 participating venues each year. So how does it work?

Well, if a bar or restaurant is interested in participating, they sign up online and specify a charity of choice (picked from an official partner list). Then, a portion of each Negroni sale during the week, held June 24-30, goes to that organization, as well as any additional donations the bar would like to make.

The Negroni includes gin, Campari and vermouth.

Louisville is no stranger to Negroni Week, and in fact, we’ve been supporters for years. This week, 37 of our bars and restaurants (full list below) are participating in the fundraiser and serving up both traditional and tweaked versions of the cocktail.

For example, Taj will be serving up the classic 1:1:1 ratio version of the Negroni, while Big Bar is throwing the ingredients into its slushy machine and serving frozen Negronis all week long.

You can check online as to which charity each Louisville bar/restaurant has chosen, or you can just ask them when you swing by for a drink. The celebration continues through Sunday, June 30.
