What will it take to get you off your couch, especially now that temperatures are well below freezing? How about free live music showcasing the best talent Louisville has to offer? That’s the idea behind “Free Week,” which is organized by the local listings site Do502.

“Free Week” will take place Jan. 28-31 and feature four nights of free shows with four to five acts each. The participating venues are New Vintage, Zanzabar, Headliners and Mercury Ballroom, and bands include Coliseum, Parlour, A Lion Named Roar, Discount Guns, The Hot Wires, Jalin Roze, 1200 and many more.

“Free Week” takes place Jan. 28-31.

Do502’s co-owner Jeffrey Smith says “Free Week” is based off a similar concept in Austin where local bands are touted and celebrated before all the craziness and hubbub of SXSW takes over the city.

“I love the idea of ‘Free Week’ being this thing that happens during the slowest time of year for our venues and bands,” Smith says. “This could turn into hundreds of potential new fans discovering new bands … (It’s) Louisville’s chance to step away from the Netflix cue and support our local talent and more adventurous venues.”

Smith says he is thankful the venues stepped up to participate in a new event, and the musicians came on board soon after. “Louisville artists get asked to perform a lot for free, so I completely understand when some folks say no based on the demand of doing yet another show for free,” he says. “However, I look at it as an opportunity to help develop the Louisville scene while also continuing to broaden your base.”
