La Suerte, the new Latin restaurant in the Highlands space where North End Café spent seven years in business, is now open.
The concept features brunch, lunch and dinner menus and is under the ownership of North End Café owner Chris Seckman, Adrian Jimarez and Oscar Ortiz.
While those familiar with North End will notice a new color scheme and feel, the layout is similar. The décor in La Suerte, which means “luck” in Spanish, is sparse, but the new color scheme of green, purple, red and pink gives the restaurant a vibrant atmosphere. Dark blue tablecloths help it feel clean and modern, but the vibe is still relaxed. The bar at the back of the restaurant also remains in place.
The exterior of the restaurant also is quite different — gone is the traditional green and beige color scheme. The restaurant now is an eye-catching blue with red trim.
North End Café, which closed in February, “had run its course” in the space, Seckman told Insider Louisville. The original North End Café, at 1722 Frankfort Ave., has been open since 2003 and remains in operation.
However, he stressed that the restaurant’s tradition of serving fresh, quality meals will continue with the new concept, Seckman added, calling La Suerte, “Basically North End Café, but with Latin food.”
Jimarez, a 14-year-employee of North End, also will serve as executive chef, and his menu has a leaning toward seafood and other dishes popular in Mexico and South American countries.
In addition, in the space where North End Slice, a pizza-by-the-slice concept, was will in the near future reopen as Lucky Burrito, a fast-casual concept that will be geared for carry-out. Seckman did say the space will seat 20 or so people for those who want to dine in.
That “burrito joint,” as Seckman called it will focus, obviously, on signature burritos, but also will feature tortas, tacos, tamales and other options.
In the meantime, the brunch menu at La Suerte offers classics like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, along with entrees like carne con huevos (steak and eggs), migas (scrambled eggs with corn chips, jalapenos and cheddar) and picadillo (ground beef, potatoes, carrots, jalapenos and eggs). Jimarez said a top seller at brunch so far is the huevos divorciados, which is two eggs, refried beans, with green and red sauces.
The dinner menu features entrees ranging from a chipotle grilled half chicken to steak chimichurri, with some intriguing specialty dinners like lamb chop barbacoa and spaghetti and shrimp. Appetizers include basics like queso dip but also delve into fried calamari, shrimp a la parilla and mussels.
Seckman and Jimarez identified tacos durados as an appetizer favorite of diners so far, while the enchiladas suizas and cochinata pibil, which is slow-cooked pork, highlight the entrees.
The lunch menu essentially is a pared-down version of dinner, featuring quesadillas, a torta and a burger option.
Seckman said the menu is likely to evolve with time.
Hours for La Suerte, located at 2116 Bardstown Road, are Monday through Wednesday, 4-11 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-11 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
