New moniker for ResCare ahead of a move to a new HQ
ResCare has changed its name to BrightSpring Health Services ahead of moving to its new headquarters on North Whittington Parkway in a few months.
The name change was announced this week by the company, which provides diversified home and community-based health services to about 60,000 people in 44 states. It’s also the parent company of several brands that, in some cases, will get renamed, too.
“As care preferences and health care needs are changing, BrightSpring’s new name reflects the company’s evolution that began nearly two years ago to successfully meet the multifaceted and multidisciplinary needs of the populations it serves amid the changing health care landscape,” according to a news release from the company.
BrightSpring will move into its new headquarters in early November, occupying about half of the 140,000-square-foot building and housing about 360 people. Nationwide, the company employs about 45,000 people, including 1,900 in Kentucky.
The company, which is owned by Toronto-based private equity firm Onex, is receiving about $550,000 in state tax incentives and grants for the building project.
Aircraft mechanics reach deal with UPS on pay, benefits
Teamsters Local 2727 announced this week that it had reached a tentative agreement with UPS on a five-year contract that includes “dramatic” raises in pay for all aircraft mechanics and related employees, including an immediate 16 percent pay bump.
Union officials said the 1,300 aircraft mechanics and related employees it represents would vote on the deal in the next few weeks. UPS said the proposed five-year contract would go into effect immediately upon ratification and become amendable five years after ratification.
Teamsters Local 2727 said the pay rates and benefits “surpass those at FedEx and all other major U.S.-based carriers. Upon ratification of the new contract, Local 2727 members will become the highest paid aviation mechanics in the country by a wide margin.”
Other highlights, UPS said, include an immediate pay increase at ratification of 16.04 percent and 3 percent annual wage increases over the life of the contract; full retroactive pay for all hours worked going back to the amendable date of Nov. 1, 2013; increased pension contributions to 13.5 percent (from 13 percent); and the existing 401(k) match also will be applied to retroactive payments. Health benefits remain unchanged with no premiums, but an annual deductible of $200 for single coverage and $400 for family coverage will apply.
In a statement, UPS said it was “pleased that Teamster’s Local 2727 and company negotiators have reached a tentative agreement to amend the contract for a five-year term for our aircraft mechanics. The next step involves a ratification vote by the membership. We believe the proposed contract meet the needs of our employees and the business by rewarding employees with industry-leading pay and benefits, while also providing enhanced flexibility, positioning UPS to meet customer needs, and addressing competitor challenges.” —Mickey Meece
Louisville chefs to join acclaimed chefs from around the country at Bourbon & Beyond
Although we still have more than a month to go before the annual bourbon, music and food festival known as Bourbon & Beyond, the lineup of chef pairings was announced this week, and it has us starving for September.

Along with the demos, the local food vendors have been announced as well, and those include everything from Doc Crow’s, Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen and Boss Hog BBQ to Citizen 7, Ramiro’s Cantina and Whiskey Dry.
JCTC partners with Mercedes-Benz on apprenticeship
The partnership between Jefferson Community and Technical College and Mercedes-Benz USA underscores the state’s development of “high-tech, cutting-edge” educational training programs, according to a news release.
The classroom facility, which includes traditional classroom space along with a high-tech repair garage with 13 vehicles, is at 1226 Rowan Street in the Portland community, according to JCTC. Students will train on Mercedes-Benz vehicles and intern at a Mercedes-Benz dealership with an opportunity to gain full-time employment at a local or regional location after completing the program, JCTC said.
“There is no other place of higher learning positioned better than Jefferson to be the conduit for economic growth in Louisville and the rest of the state,” said Dr. Ty J. Handy, JCTC president, in a news release.
The renovated former warehouse expands Jefferson’s physical and educational footprint, officials said. Construction is underway on the $24 million Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology Center, which is slated to open in 2020. —Mickey Meece
Two local chain restaurants close locations
Two small local chains — Rocky’s and FireFresh BBQ — recently closed locations without warning.
Earlier this week, an Insider Louisville reader alerted us to the fact that Rocky’s Pizza and Panini in Gardiner Lane Shopping Center suddenly shuttered. She wanted to know why.
Unfortunately, emails and calls to Rocky’s ownership were unreturned. A note posted on the restaurant’s door saying it’s closed is the only indication something has changed. The restaurant’s social media does not state anything about the closure.
In April, the other Rocky’s location in Jeffersonville closed abruptly. The ownership group, which also owns the Buckhead’s restaurants, confirmed the closure but did not say why the decision was made.
And despite a Facebook post that says the downtown location of FireFresh BBQ is undergoing renovations, it seems that the local barbecue chain shut its doors near Fifth and Market streets. Signs also recently went up in the window advertising the space as available for lease.
SummerWorks concluded this week with a record number of participants, some 6,245, according to Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.
Speaking of employment, KentuckianaWorks reported that Louisville’s latest unemployment rate is 4.3 percent, compared to 4.5 percent at the same time last year. Sarah Ehresman is now deputy director of labor market intel for the Louisville region’s Workforce Development Board.
Old Louisville’s St. James Court, and its annual affair St. James Court Art Show, will receive a historical marker, courtesy of the Kentucky Historical Society, next month. The plaque will mention both the development of the court in the 1800s and the founding of the art show.
Three new surgeons have joined the University of Louisville Department of Neurological Surgery this summer. Drs. Norberto Andaluz, Dale Ding and Emily Payne Sieg will perform surgeries at UofL Hospital and Jewish Hospital, which is part of KentuckyOne Health. They also will provide advanced training and conduct research.
