After a successful turnout last weekend for the Kentuckiana Pride Festival, the celebration of inclusion, unity and acceptance continues Saturday, June 22, with the Southern Indiana Pride, held just across the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville.
The event includes a parade that starts at 4 p.m., followed by a festival with more than 60 vendors, live music, drag shows and much more.
Insider caught up with Erin Short, director of the festival, who tells us this is the first year the event will go by the all-encompassing Southern Indiana Pride title as opposed to just Jeffersonville Pride.
“When I took over as director, that was one of the first things I wanted to change so that we could include the entire Southern Indiana community,” she says. “We are also returning to Big Four Station this year for the first time since the first Jeffersonville Pride Festival. And this year will be the first year that we will have a beer garden, which will be provided by Cluckers on the River.”
Short says organizers are hoping to attract nearly 1,000 people if the weather behaves itself, and the event always is family friendly as well as dog friendly. The mission is to provide an event where everyone feels at home.
“My overall goal is to give our community a space to show their pride and feel able to be their true self,” she says. “It is important for everyone to feel like they have somewhere where they are able to do that, and this is something our community lacked — until now.”
She’s most looking forward to seeing how all the hard work by organizers and volunteers pays off.
“We have put so much love and passion into this event, and I’m so excited for everyone to experience it for themselves.”
Southern Indiana Pride runs from 4-11 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville. It’s free and open to all.
