The four-acre farm in Crestwood that 3rd Turn Brewing acquired last December will open on Friday, having transformed with a 16-handle taproom, outdoor bar and patios, expansive garden and event space.
The brewery complex — although the brewing system has not yet been installed — also includes a small farm where staff will grow herbs, fruit and vegetables that will be used in brewing projects. Its official name is 3rd Turn Oldham Gardens.
During a tour, 3rd Turn co-owner Ben Shinkle pointed to the beer garden with its 68-foot handmade table in the beer garden and called it “the star of the show.” The serene garden features a tree canopy that gives the space the feel of something out of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
And it’s huge. On top of that, there is room to expand it.
“When it’s all said and done,” Shinkle said, “we could have close to an acre of beer garden.”
While the dog-friendly beer garden, with its Oktoberfest-style tables for gathering, is the focal point of the new brewery, the taproom also has been decked out in much of the same reclaimed wood found in the beer garden.
Shinkle said a large portion of the wood used to build out the complex came from a toppled 110-year-old barn in Henry County. The rest was re-used wood already on the property.
“I drove 64,000 trim nails” in building out the space, Shinkle said.
In the taproom sit multiple six-top tables, also ideal for group interaction, while a more intimate adjacent room features smaller tables and a wall shelf for a forthcoming mug club.
Just outside lies an outdoor bar with another 16 tap handles, along with a number of two-top tables and an ample patio space, with a small stage area for live music.
Taps in both areas will be split between 3rd Turn beers and guest brews, which Shinkle said he and fellow owners — Greg Hayden, Brian Minrath and his brother Dale Shinkle — “hope to keep as Kentucky-heavy as we can.”
In addition, bourbon, wine, cider and the popular bourbon slushies will be available for those who aren’t fond of craft beer. A small kitchen will eventually be used to serve food, and a smoker will be brought in to make barbecue.
The menu is undetermined, Shinkle said, but he suggested it will be a combination of barbecue and “bar fare.” That service should be ready in a couple of weeks, Shinkle said. For the opening, food trucks will be onsite.
Behind the outdoor bar and beer garden is lawn space where customers can spread out blankets or bring chairs in and enjoy the coming fall weather. Meanwhile, a 5,000-square-foot event space is in the process of being enclosed with more reclaimed wood and will be rented out for wedding receptions and other private events.
The original plan included a seven-barrel brewing system, which will be installed soon. The brewery also will include a barrel program and plenty of experimental beers to be sold at the brewery.
3rd Turn’s original brewery, located in Jeffersontown, was the first in the Louisville area to be located outside the I-264 perimeter. The new farm brewery complex is the first to open outside I-265.
Hayden said last December that Oldham County was a target all along when the ownership team looked at opening a second brewery, with the primary goal of “educating people on craft beer and investing in the community.”
3rd Turn Oldham Gardens is located at 6300 Old Lagrange Road. It officially opens on Friday, Sept. 29, from 3-11 p.m. Going forward, the brewery will be open Saturdays from 3-11 p.m. and Thursdays from 3-10 p.m.
