What if being an employee at your workplace also meant the chance to earn a college degree with financial assistance?

That’s just one perk that employees at Citizens Union Bank enjoy as part of their generous benefits package. Employees have access to $2,500 each year to spend on college classes to earn bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees, certificates and licensing.

“It gives our employees an incentive to learn,” says Melissa Banta, vice president of human resources at CUB. “We have a branch manager who earned a degree in business.”

Crystal Walker

Meet Crystal Walker

Walker graduated in June 2018 from Spalding University with a B.S. in Business Administration. She has been with CUB for seven years and currently manages two CUB branches in Shelbyville. She completed her coursework during evenings, weekends and online.

Walker started at CUB as a teller when she was 29 years old, and now at age 35 her future is looking bright.

“My husband really inspired me to go to college because he was earning his degree at the same time,” says Walker. “I believe getting my degree has already opened and will continue to open doors for me.”

Walker says she discovered through her classes that her true passion is in training, and she one day hopes to move from managing branches to serving in a corporate training department.

“I realized that’s the part of my job that I enjoy and I’m good at it,” Walker says. “I love teaching others.”

Crissy Sullivan

Meet Crissy Sullivan

Sullivan first earned her Associate’s Degree from Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and then went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting at Sullivan University. She says it was a huge relief to complete her coursework in December 2017.

“It is completely awesome to work for a company that has this benefit and helps pay for college,” Sullivan says. “I wouldn’t have had the resources without CUB.”

Sullivan, a loan portfolio manager at CUB, has been with the bank for 17 years.

“I have a real sense of accomplishment, especially after being out of school for 20 years,” Sullivan says.

Marcie Watkins

Meet Marcie Watkins

Watkins, an assistant branch manager at CUB’s Blankenbaker location, began her career at CUB in 2012 as a customer service leader. She began taking classes toward her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration with a Managerial Option in Fall 2017 and plans to complete her degree in Spring 2019 at Jefferson Community and Technical College.

“My daughter is 18 years old, just graduated from high school and is going on to college at the University of Louisville,” Watkins says. “I can’t have her getting ahead of me!”

Watkins says that CUB is an ideal employer for people who want to grow in their education.

“So much of the information I’m learning in class is applicable to my job every day,” Watkins says. “Honestly, I really hope to move my way up within CUB. I don’t plan to go anywhere else.”

Jeanne Willard

Meet Jeanne Willard

Willard, vice president of training and support administration at CUB, earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership at U of L in December 2017.

“CUB allowed me to take my class projects and implement them in real life at the bank,” Willard says. “They were super supportive.”

For example, Willard revamped and shortened the bank’s PowerPoint presentations based on techniques she learned in class.

“I think CUB’s tuition assistance is a great program,” Willard says. “My degree program just mirrored my career. As long as you don’t mind putting in the work, you can do it!”
