As a way to avoid the Fourth of July event competition, the South End’s Riverview Independence Festival typically is held the weekend before the red, white and blue madness begins. This year is no different, as the eighth annual festival takes over Riverview Park on Saturday, June 29, from 5 to 10 p.m.

The event features a solid musical lineup that leans toward the country persuasion (more on that in a bit), as well as several activities for the kids, including a 24-foot climbing wall, the Riverview Splash Park, Jefferson Memorial Forest’s Echo Mobile, and visits by the Louisville League of Mascots as well as the Squallis Puppeteers.

You can also expect food and drink stations, and because the event is co-sponsored by Brown-Forman, we assume there will be adult beverages available as well, although there was no mention to it online.

The night concludes, of course, with a large fireworks show on the Ohio River at 10 p.m.

Headlining the event is country up-and-comer Stephanie Quayle, who recently was inducted into CMT’s Next Women of Country Class of 2019. The Montana native performs songs about love, loss and everything in between, and she’s been touring steadily since the release of 2017’s “Love the Way You See Me” album.

You can bet Quayle will be performing her new single, “If I was a Cowboy,” on Saturday, a catchy pop-country tune about wishing you could possess all the stoic qualities of a cowboy, namely being unemotional and being able to jump right back on the saddle after a breakup.

Rounding out the lineup is Shane Dawson, a singer-songwriter from Mount Washington who played the Riverview Festival last year, and local group Long Lost Country, which plays classic country and honky-tonk hits.

Admission into the Riverview Independence Festival is free. Riverview Park is located at 8202 Greenwood Road just beyond the Pleasure Ridge Park neighborhood. LG&E is offering up its lot nearby for auxiliary parking, and that is located at 7301 Distribution Drive. Shuttles will run every 15 minutes to and from Riverview Park until 10:45 p.m. (after the fireworks).
