The fifth annual Louisville LGBT Film Festival features more than 15 national and international films that all tackle LGBT issues, relationships, ex-relationships, teenage angst and forbidden love. All films will be screened at the Village 8 Theatres this weekend, Oct. 16-18.

Travis Myles, chair of the film fest, says the purpose of the event is to highlight the work of LGBTQ directors, writers and actors, and celebrate the diversity of the community by telling their stories.

“While LGBT stories are told more and more in the mainstream media, they are not always our true stories,” says Myles.

"Tab Hunter Confidential" will be screened on Sunday.

“Tab Hunter Confidential” will be screened on Sunday.

The full schedule is below, and highlights include feature film “Those People,” about a young man in love with his manipulative best friend; “Elise,” a short documentary about a young, transgender, homeless woman; “Sock Puppet,” an ode to an ex-girlfriend; “While You Weren’t Looking,” a feature film that examines the changing landscape of post-Apartheid South Africa through its characters; and “Tab Hunter Confidential,” a documentary on the popular but closeted 1950s actor.

Myles says this year’s films have an edge to them — more so than in previous years. The screening committee watched about 150 shorts and features and narrowed it down to the 16 that’ll be screened this weekend.

“I’m always excited to see our audience’s reaction to the films,” he adds. “There’s a longstanding impression that LGBT and independent films are lower quality than big-budget Hollywood films, but that’s just not true.”

Tickets for individual sessions are $10, or you can buy an entire pass for the LGBT Film Festival for $50. They’re available at the Village 8 box office.
