The good news: Through advanced medicine, research and education, people are living longer and have a better chance at surviving a heart attack than ever before. The bad news: Heart disease is still the No. 1 leading cause of death in the United States.

The American Heart Association has been working for more than 90 years to help educate people on making healthier choices and recognizing the signs of a heart attack before it’s too late. February is American Heart Month, so to honor that and help raise funds for AHA, Nanz & Kraft is partnering once again with Four Roses to offer the 11th annual Flower Hour Valentine’s event on Friday, Feb. 9.

Last year alone, the event raised nearly $4,000, and organizers are hoping to top that.

Flower Hour — which takes place among the local florist’s many arrangements and knickknacks — features bourbon tastings, snacks, jazz music by Swing Theory and a silent auction.

Plus, you get to hang out with Four Roses Master Distiller Brent Elliott.

“Each year I look forward to spending the evening mingling over bourbon and completing Valentine’s Day shopping with our guests at Flower Hour,” said Elliott in a press release. “The event provides the perfect opportunity to kick off your weekend, all while donating to an important cause.”

The event runs from 5:30-8 p.m. and has a suggested donation of $10. If you’re willing to give $20 for a VIP ticket, it’ll get you a gift pack featuring various items from Four Roses, Nanz & Kraft, American Heart Association, Cellar Door Chocolates and Heine Brother’s Coffee.

Attendees also are encouraged to wear red — for both Valentine’s Day and heart health.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, so it means a great deal to us to partner with Four Roses and Nanz & Kraft to raise awareness about heart health and much needed funds for our community during Flower Hour,” said Kelsey Radcliffe of AHA in the release.

Nanz & Kraft is located at 141 Breckenridge Lane in St. Matthews.
