The birthplace of the cheeseburger is on the market.
Louisville-based real estate group PRG Commercial Property Advisors is listing the 8,500-square-foot former Kaelin’s Restaurant space, along with all the restaurant equipment in it, for $695,000.
But that’s not all — the property also includes a 50-space parking lot and the two-bedroom home beside Kaelin’s. The house is just less than 1,000 square feet and includes one and a half bathrooms.
“We are more than excited to list this property because it was such a Louisville landmark,” said Kim Meehan, an associate with PRG.
The restaurant building, located at 1801 Newburg Road, is most well-known as the former Kaelin’s, which opened in 1934. However, Mulligan’s Pub & Grille later operated out of that same building. Mulligan’s suddenly closed in 2014.
Insider Louisville last wrote about Kaelin’s when it was auctioned off in a foreclosure sale. The winning bidder was River Valley Financial Bank, which held the title to the restaurant and two-bedroom home. The bank paid $660,000 in the auction for both properties.
Now the bank is looking to offload the property. Because of its history in Louisville and the strong affinity residents have for Kaelin’s, Meehan is hopeful that PRG can find someone who wants to renovate the building and open a new business there.
“The best use would be another restaurant/bar,” she said, adding that she used to visit Kaelin’s and would personally like to see an establishment that is family friendly during the day and a bar at night. “You could really capture so many audiences.”
