Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 11.43.46 AMMonday morning, Humana employees took to social media to discuss the fact that they were unable to work because the company’s network went down. Not only did it affect email and phone systems, Humana’s website also was down. The landing page’s message read: “Sorry for the disruption. We are working to restore service. Thank you for your patience.”

A Humana employee forwarded Insider the internal text message employees received:

FROM: Humana Notification System

Humana is experiencing large scale network issues which are also impacting some phones and remote email. The issues are aggressively being worked, however there is no current estimate for system restoration.  Periodic updates will be provided.

The outage was not limited to Louisville. It was a Humana systemwide outage.

At around 10:30 a.m., Humana posted this note to its Facebook page: “Good Morning, is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the temporary service issues we are experiencing. We’re working to restore service as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.”

Based on other social media posts, the outage began at least two hours earlier. And some Humana employees were sent home early.

Tom Noland, senior vice president for corporate communications at Humana, said policy holders would experience some delays in responsiveness, but none of the policies would be affected long-term.

Humana is the largest company by revenue in Kentucky.

UPDATED 12:25 p.m.

Noland confirmed that the system did go down around 9 a.m. He said that Humana is “still investigating the cause” and that there is no immediate timeline for when the system will be up but that technicians are diligently at work trying to fix it.

UPDATED 5:36 p.m.

Humana’s website was down until approximately 5:00 p.m. The website is currently back up. We are waiting word from Humana on whether the rest of the systems have been restored and what caused the day-long outage.

UPDATED 8:45 p.m.

Kate Marx, regional communications consultant at Humana, said that the outage wasn’t sabotage.  The first system that came back up was the website.  And now all systems are up as of 8:30 p.m. She thanks the customers and Humana’s partners for being so patient.
