Jefferson County courts will start accepting electronically filed legal documents on Oct. 21. This will help the local courts system join a data revolution already in progress nationwide.

This “eFiling,” as it’s known, allows documents to be filed seven days a week, 24 hours a day. All 120 Kentucky counties will have eFiling available by the end of the year, according to a release from the state’s court system. eFiling training for attorneys will start in Jefferson County at the end of September.

“eFiling is ushering in an important new era for the Kentucky justice system,” Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. said in a statement. “Gone will be the days of attorneys on deadline rushing to file a motion before the courthouse closes.” Minton also said the cost savings to the Kentucky court system and practitioners will be substantial, and the entire state’s legal system will become more efficient. Federal courts have offered online filing services for years.

The eFiling system is provided by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), which introduced the program to Kentucky’s state courts in December 2013, at a test site in the Franklin County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. The system first processed civil cases, with criminal cases starting October 2014.

The move to eFiling got kickstarted in March 2013, when Kentucky’s judicial branch received approval from the legislature to issue $28.1 million in bonds to fund a new case management system.
