I received a photo of today’s LEO Weekly cover via text this morning, and I initially thought perhaps it was a self-reflection about the grave mistakes new ownership has made in recent days. A dark prognostication — an acknowledgment of LEO’s grim future if great care isn’t taken to right the wrongs that have been done.
Now that would have been edgy.
Upon closer inspection, however, it became clear the illustration of a coffin being lowered into the ground was about golf. The headline: “Ziegler puts Tiger Woods to rest.”
Golf — that certainly fits with new owner Aaron Yarmuth’s life motto (inspired by “Arthur,” his favorite movie): “Isn’t fun the best thing to have?”
Then my cell phone dinged again, this time with an email containing an image of what was originally slated to be on this week’s cover of LEO Weekly: A photo collage of west Louisville, which was to accompany a guide about all there is to do in the city’s West End neighborhoods.
That story still ran in the paper, though the author, Dana Duncan, has lamented on Facebook the fact that the many colorful photos meant to accompany the piece were excluded.
This doesn’t bode well for the future of a publication left with zero editorial staff, after editor Sara Havens and staff writer April Corbin were laid off on Friday, with the remaining two editorial employees — Peter Berkowitz and Joe Sonka — walking out on Monday.
Under the circumstances, it’s not surprising the alt-weekly’s website has not been updated to reflect today’s issue — after all, there’s no one left in the building with the knowledge to carry out that basic task.
