Another hotel is planned for downtown Louisville. A local developer submitted plans to the city this week for a new Hyatt hotel at the corner of Market and Second streets.

Louisville-based Carney Management Co., owned by Martin Carney, is the developer.

The project is referred to as a co-branded Hyatt Place/Hyatt House limited service hotel in the plan application submitted to Louisville Metro Planning & Design Services; renderings show the building with both “Hyatt House” and “Hyatt Place” signs on the façade.

The eight-story hotel, to occupy parcels at 133 W. Market, 127 W. Market and 123 S. Second St., would include approximately 273 rooms, plus meeting space, a restaurant and bar and “other traditional hotel amenity spaces” on the first floor, according to the application.

A floor plan shows four elevators, a waiting area in the lobby, staff areas and restroom facilities.

Guest drop-off will be located behind the hotel building and accessible by way of a drive from Second Street, with an exit at West Market. Pedestrian entrances will be located on both streets.

The lot is currently occupied by the former Action Loan, which has an address of 143 W. Market St., along with a Persian restaurant and a Subway. The hotel would be situated caddy-corner to the Kentucky Exposition Center.

The Hyatt would add to the recent growth surge in hotel rooms downtown. According to the Louisville Tourism & Convention Bureau, there are nearly 6,000 rooms downtown currently and more than 20,000 total, and that number continues to grow.

The surge in hotel development has coincided with the $200 million renovation to the convention center, which recently re-opened. Other nearby recent hotel developments include the Omni Hotel on S. Second St. and Hotel Distil and Moxy just a few blocks north, which are slated to open later this year.
