It’s fitting that a luau is planned for the hottest weekend so far this year, so kudos to the NuLu Business Association for great timing. The third annual NuLu Luau will take over East Market Street from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, when temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 90s.

The free party will include live music, a limbo contest, tropical cocktails, a pig roast and a vintage market curated by the folks of Fleur de Flea called Pickers in Paradise. The 700 block of East Market Street will be closed for the event, and Fleur de Flea Co-Founder Lisa Porter tells Insider she’ll have two 20-by-60-foot tables packed full of vendors selling vintage items, antiques, vinyl, street-ware and more.

Fleur de Flea focuses exclusively on vintage items, which sets it apart from other markets in town.

“We are a vintage urban market,” Porter explains. “We have vendors from all over the region setting up with their vintage, antique, collectible, repurposed and recycled items. We don’t allow any garage sale items, direct sales, etc. It is really a ‘pickers paradise’ with so many cool items, funk and junk.”

Live music will begin at noon with the UL Steel Drum Band, followed by the Tsunami Secret Surf Society at 2 p.m. and The Get Down at 6 p.m. You also can expect fire dancers, Hawaiian shirts for sale, free leis at participating NuLu retailers, a tropical photo-op and rum-based cocktails — which check just about every box for a luau.

And speaking of cocktails, a handful of bars and restaurants in the neighborhood are participating in a Luau Cocktail Competition using an original recipe made with Captain Morgan rum and Reàl Cocktail Ingredients.

Competitors include AC Hotel, Against the Grain, Galaxie, Garage Bar, Goodwood Brewing, Grind, Harvest, Taj, and Wiltshire on Market.

Insider got a peek at the cocktail list, and some that stand out include Harvest’s Pink Paradise — with Reál Gourmet Cream of Coconut, Captain Morgan’s, Whittaker Farms strawberries, BD’s lime bitters, fresh squeezed lime juice and fresh mint — and Taj’s Baewatch — with Captain Morgan’s, Reál Strawberry, Reál Banana, mint, lime juice, bitters and Bitter Truth Orgeat.

The NuLu Luau runs Saturday, July 20, from noon to 9 p.m.

And if you’re interested in more Fleur de Flea opportunities, the group will be at the Parklands of Floyds Fork (Beckley Creek Pavillion) on Friday, July 19, for its Friday at Floyds series held three times a summer. Along with the vintage goods for sale, attendees can partake in live music from the Hot Brown Smackdown, bourbon slashes, wine and beer tastings and a mini food truck festival.

Friday at Floyds is free and runs from 5 to 9 p.m. After Friday’s event, the last one will be held Friday, Aug. 16.
