Happy Repeal Day!

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, and your right to go out and enjoy a drink or two…or more!

But where should you go?

How about trying something new? Something brand new, that is. Meta is opening its doors for the first time this evening, featuring craft cocktails, wine, one-of-a-kind French sodas, and floors tiled in pennies.

Since July, owners Hannah Kandle and Jeremy Johnson have been renewing the old West Chestnut camera shop-turned-strip club space into the new vintage-inspired bar.

Jeremy Johnson’s name might sound familiar, as he was one of the co-founders of┬áMeat, the former speakeasy-style bar in Butchertown.

And like Meat, Meta is going for a particular theme.

“We have the neon sign out front to keep the old vintage feel,” says Kandle, noting that she’s also excited about the New York-imported wallpaper in the main bar area. Floor tiles made of recycled copper pennies add an eclectic vintage touch to the space.

If the style of the bar isn’t enough to attract you, maybe the long list of French wines will. “We just have an affinity for French wine,” says Kandle. But if you’re not a Francophile when it comes to wine, you should check out one of Meta’s “Exchange Students,” which is what they’re calling their non-French bottles.

In addition to an impressive wine list, Meta specializes in craft cocktails made with interesting ingredients you won’t find in drinks at other Louisville bars.

For those not inclined to imbibe, Meta has a collection of syrups imported from France for the creation of unique non-alcoholic sodas.

The only thing missing is a food menu, but that’s soon to change. “We’re hoping to start serving food within the next six months,” Kandle says, although the type of fare has not yet been determined.

Something French, perhaps?
