As we mentioned last month, Social Speed is a monthly event where the Speed Art Museum and its staff host an after-hours event geared toward creating active engagement. In April, the theme was “Getting to Know You” and featured a meet-and-greet with various artists and staff. This month’s Social Speed — held Thursday, May 12 — is titled “Derby’s Done!” and includes an adult cocktail bar along with live music, film and various tours.

The event takes place from 6-9 p.m. at the museum and touts everything that makes Kentucky great — from bluegrass music to bourbon. Bands include Kentucky Blue Belles of Sparta, Ky., from 6-7 p.m. and Louisville’s Relic from 7-9 p.m. in the Grand Hall.

Speed Cinema is hosting a “Short Film Slam” from 7-9 p.m. that’ll showcase a collection of short films — 10 minutes or less — made by Louisville filmmakers, and they’ll be on hand to answer questions afterward.

A couple other events planned include a “My Old Kentucky Home Tour” at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.; interactive exhibits via Art Sparks; an opportunity to create your own interpretation of Deborah Butterfield’s sculptures, “Burnt Pine” and “Danuta”; and entertainers from Locust Grove and the Louisville Folk School will sing and/or act in various parts of the museum.

Admission to Social Speed is $15 and free for members.
