The Blue Apple Players will perform a new, interactive performance adapted from a local source: U of L Soccer Coach Ken Lolla’s children’s book, “Finding Your Gifts.”
On Friday, July 25, more than 125 soccer campers ages 6-10, coaches and parents will watch Lolla’s story come to life on the same field where they have been developing their soccer skills under the coaching of Ken Lolla and a team of talented players and coaches. The big surprise for campers will be that the Blue Apple actors will ask them to be as involved in the performance as they are during soccer drills.
In Lolla’s book, a young boy named Tyler meets a giraffe in need of friendship. Tyler’s jungle-animal soccer teammates doubt the giraffe because of his differences. But it’s those very same differences which turn out to be gifts and result in aiding the team’s success.
Lolla wanted to bring the story to more children by taking it beyond the book’s pages, which is why he reached out to Blue Apple Players, a children’s theater company experienced in creating new education theater programs for today’s kids.
“Using the power of interactive storytelling, we bring the story home to them,” Blue Apple Players Education Director Heather Burns said in a press release.
Essentially, two professional actors will engage campers to take on roles and coach them through acting out the story during the performance. The program works to engage youth in developing their thinking skills, confidence, and leadership.
The Finding Your Gifts program will be available to the public starting August 2014. Schools, community centers, libraries, churches and other organizations may schedule a performance for a fee. It is recommended for students K-5.
The initial performance takes place Friday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cardinal Park field, located at 2100 S. Floyd St. on the U of L Belknap campus.
