The fourth and final installment for the season of “Spalding at 21c: Voice and Vision” will be held Thursday and will once again feature regional poets and fiction writers offering up their work in an open-mic format. The artists all have ties to Spalding University, and this session will include Kiki Petrosino, Robert Sachs, Flora K. Schildknecht, Amy Foos Kapoor, Ellyn Lichvar and Katy Yocom.

Yocom, who is also a co-host for the event, says the program has been successful and continues to build its audience. The sessions are held in the gallery space of 21c Museum Hotel and usually fill up.

At Spalding, Yocom says the MFA in Creative Writing program pays close attention to the inter-relatedness of different art forms and the way they can influence each other. For example, she explains, a painting could influence a poem, or vice-versa.

“The arts have a lot to say to each other,” Yocom says.

By hosting the event at 21c, a hotel and museum known for contemporary art, Yocom believes the writing is brought together with the physical art pieces in the modern art gallery.

The event kicks off with a few open-mic presentations lasting one to two minutes each. Individuals sign up for a slot on a first-come, first-serve basis, and from there, each of the featured writers presents within a fairly short timeframe as well.

“Keep it short, keep it lively,” Yocom says.

“Spalding at 21c” will take place on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 6-7:15 p.m. at 21c Museum Hotel and is free and open to the pubic.
