Civic engagement and philanthropic giving are at the core of Louisvillian Rob King, a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. A firm believer in giving back, Rob’s passion for the Louisville community has led to his involvement in a myriad of organizations, including the Louisville Ballet, Fund for the Arts, the National Association of Women Business Owners Foundation, Centre College’s Alumni Association and Dupont Manual’s Crimson Mission.
Recently, Rob was nominated to try a different approach to philanthropy — one that requires a bit of comedic finesse. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Rob is one of five local leaders participating as a stand-up comedian for Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana’s 10th annual Night of a Thousand Laughs on May 17!
Rob joins a growing list of Northwestern Mutual financial advisors and staff who support Gilda’s Club’s mission — to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Northwestern Mutual – Louisville is proud to support Gilda’s Club as the Night of a Thousand Laughs’ presenting sponsor.
A passion for community
You may not think of financial planning and laughter together, but Rob is no stranger to making a client or friend chuckle. “Charisma, energy and wit are in his DNA,” says Meg Gatti, Northwestern Mutual’s chief marketing officer.
Rob was named one of Louisville’s New Faces of Philanthropy seven years ago, but he is no longer considered “new” by any stretch. In 2017, former Metro Councilwoman Angela Leet honored Rob for his philanthropic involvement during Black History Month.
In 2013, Rob was named the Young Alumnus of the Year by Centre, where he was the captain of the basketball team and ran track and field. Rob is also a frequent guest on U of L’s campus, where he facilitates conversations on financial planning with collegiate athletes.
Rob has served on various boards and committees for the Fund for the Arts and the Louisville Ballet, and he recently joined the board of the National Association of Women Business Owners Foundation.
A company with aligning values
The mission of Gilda’s Club aligns with Northwestern Mutual’s philanthropic mission. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation is committed to accelerating the search for a cure for childhood cancer while providing support to families facing the disease and survivors struggling with treatment late effects.
This past year, Gilda’s Club nominated Northwestern Mutual as the Philanthropist of the Year, which was awarded to the company by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. “When I think of Northwestern Mutual, I think of philanthropy and the impact that it has made on so many families right here in our community living with cancer,” says Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana Chief Executive Officer, Karen Morrison.
Fellow Northwestern Mutual financial advisor and friend, Mark Kull, says he will share plenty of comedic advice with his buddy before the show. Mark is a Night of a Thousand Laughs alum and was welcomed back as the show’s emcee in 2018.
Matthew Allen, also a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual, recently helped Gilda’s Club kick off their capital campaign to build a new clubhouse. Matthew was presented with a symbolic Gilda’s Club construction hard hat by Dawson Barr, a 12-year-old cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member who has shared his story at numerous community events, including Northwestern Mutual’s annual meeting.
A recognized leader in his company
Rob’s leadership in Louisville’s philanthropic community blends perfectly with his profession. Rob celebrates his 15th anniversary as a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual this October.
His dedication and service to his clients have been nationally recognized by Northwestern Mutual. He has participated in speaking engagements at national conferences, and he is recognized as a specialist and mentor among his peers.
“Rob has a long list of professional and personal accolades, yet he makes you feel like you’re the most interesting person in the room,” says Northwestern Mutual managing partner, Dan Rivers. “It’s one of the many reasons he is well-respected in our community and our firm.”
Support for Gilda’s Club
Northwestern Mutual is proud to support Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana, Rob and the other comedians as the presenting sponsor of Night of a Thousand Laughs on May 17th at the Louisville Palace.
“Dozens of my Northwestern Mutual colleagues have supported Gilda’s Club in various ways,” Rob says. “I am honored to now be part of it and give back in this unique way.”
Other performers include Alli Truttman (Wicked Sheets), Bernie Lubbers (Heaven Hill Brands), Karen Lawrence (local philanthropist) and Sharon Allen (Tri-Arrows Aluminum). The headliner, Mandee McKelvey, is a Louisville-based comic.
