The Kentucky Derby Festival Pegasus Pin might just be the most valuable piece of real estate available during the three weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
First of all, when you buy a pin, you’re actually helping to support all the events that make the two weeks before Derby a showcase of fun and festivities. The pin program has become a way for the community to have ownership in the Festival and show pride in the region’s largest celebration.
In addition, these custom-designed pins are your ticket to over 30 events and concerts that make up the Kentucky Derby Festival. (Pins are $6 at retail locations and $7 at the entrance to events.) Returning this year are Festival Fun Packs, which include a Commemorative “Pegasus Power” Superhero Pin and 4 Pegasus Pins for $25.
In each Pegasus Pin envelope, you’ll find three coupons provided by retail partners like Kroger, Meijer, Papa John’s, Cox’s Smoker Outlet & Spirit Shoppe and Liquor Barn/Party Mart. Also in the envelope is a registration card with an alphanumeric code that can be used to register for the Weekly Grand Prizes.
The value of the Pin
The Pegasus Pin has become a collectible. The Pegasus Pin program started in 1973. In fact, pins from that year are so rare, they sell for $800-$1,000. (Click here to read about Phil Bitts who has been collecting pins since the beginning.)

One winner’s story
Steve Jackson was the first winner of the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience Speakeasy Bourbon Party. He’d bought some pins to have as collectibles but his wife told him he should go online and register them. That’s when he discovered he won a prize that was just perfect for him and his wife, both of whom were already interested in bourbon and its local history.
The Jacksons (and 24 of their friends) got to take a private tour of the Evan Williams distillery, learning about how the bourbon was made and tasting different bourbons. “After we toured the facility,” Jackson says, “we were led to the door of a speakeasy, where you could only enter if you knew the password. We had the whole place to ourselves and enjoyed more bourbon and a big spread of hors d’oeuvres. It was a wonderful experience!”
Gold Winner Pegasus Pins
There are over 12,000 Gold Winner Pegasus Pins in circulation. The odds of finding a gold winner Pegasus Pin are approximately 1 in 20. God Pin winner, in addition to being eligible for the Weekly Grand Prizes, also have a chance to win a 2019 Honda CR-V to be given away Friday, May 10, on WAVE 3 News.
Meijer Moment at Thunder
Teaming up with The Derby Festival, Meijer is offering a special Meijer Thunder Over Louisville Light Up Pin at all of their local stores for $8. The light up pin is also your admission to more the 30+ concerts and events, just like the Pegasus Pin.
Calling it the “Meijer Moment,” the special light-up pin is a way to let the crowd help light up the sky at Thunder Over Louisville by turning on the lights of their Meijer pins.
Fans can participate from 9:05 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. by:
- Turning on the lights of their Meijer Thunder Over Louisville Light Up Pin,
- Turning on their phone flashlights and point them to the sky, or
- Activating their glow sticks or glow wands available on the venue.
Announcements will be made over the Thunder sound system to remind everyone about the “Meijer Moment.”
