After less than a year in business, Beards and Beers is looking to grow.
Since opening last August, the barbershop has offered customers haircuts, straight-razor shaves, hair coloring and craft beers. The business has an alcohol license that allows it to sell single beers to customers to consume on-site, and it recently applied for a license that will allow customers to take beer with them when they leave.
Co-owner Melissa Gray said she noticed there was a demand among Beards and Beers’ customers for package beer sales.
“Given the location that we were in and that we have craft beer, there aren’t a lot of options for people staying down there or living down there,” she said.
Beards and Beers is located at 514 S. Fifth St. The closest package liquor and beer stores — Mike Walsh Liquor & Beer and Louisville Beer Store — are to the east of downtown.
Gray added that Beards and Beers offers some beers that aren’t commonly sold at bars, restaurants and the typical liquor store. “It’s not like you see these all over the place,” she said.
The barbershop keeps an updated beer list on its Facebook page. Beer prices range from $2 to$7.50; hair-related services start at $10 and go up to $50.
Beards and Beers’ customers are a mix of downtown residents, workers and out-of-town visitors. Many have expressed an interest in being able to bring a few of the craft beers back to their hotel room or home, Gray said.
“I don’t look at to be something big,” she said. “It’s just an extra for that client.”
Beards and Beers has five barbers and expects to add another before the first Saturday in May. Six is the maximum amount of barbers the business can accommodate, Gray said.
“Things are going great,” she said. “Everything is growing quickly.”
Beards and Beers’ hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. People under 21 are only permitted in the barbershop before noon.
