Whisky Live makes a splash at its Louisville debut

Marriott East‘s Commonwealth Ballroom could have been mistaken for a rick house Saturday night, as it hosted the Louisville premiere of Whisky Live, an event that featured samples of more than 150 bourbons and whiskeys from all over the world.

More than 800 bourbon fanatics, industry experts and even some elected officials attended the tasting experience, which was held on Saturday, June 18, in conjunction with the weeklong Bourbon Affair, a bourbon bootcamp of sorts hosted by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

Two Insider staffers attended Whisky Live and have photographic evidence of how well organized, informative and fun the event was. Most Kentucky bourbons were represented, as were whiskeys and Scotches. Each distillery offered up samples of their signature products, and some even brought along new or hard-to-find brands. Mayor Greg Fischer led a toast with Whisky Live organizer David Sweet, and Four Roses master distiller Brent Elliott provided his latest release, Elliott’s Select, as the toasting spirit.

Whisky Live is held in more than 20 cities around the world, and so far Louisville has been the smallest. Sweet told Insider last month he was looking forward to bringing Whisky Live to the bourbon capital of the world.

“That it’s happening now in Louisville is long overdue,” said Sweet. “It makes sense since it’s at the center of our nation’s distilling industry.”
