Long the site of Bader’s Food Mart, the corner lot at Broadway and Baxter Avenue, across from the entrance to Cave Hill Cemetery, is a candidate for a two-level pizza restaurant.

In a plan submitted to the city last week, Lexington-based Goodfellas Pizzeria proposes to tear down the former food mart and renovate an existing structure at 1250 E. Broadway, a former auto shop building at the rear of the roughly one-acre property. The building dates to the early 1900s.

The plan, designed by Drawing Department Architecture and Design of Cincinnati, is still under review. However, the plan was approved Tuesday by the Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue Overlay District. Will Ford, a spokesperson for Mayor Greg Fischer’s office, said once Metro Council approves an alley closure and the Board of Zoning Adjustment approves other waivers and variances, the project can head to construction, pending building permits.

The space surrounding the main structure would be used as part of a planned parking lot, beer garden and green space. Goodfellas owners also propose constructing an outdoor bar.

Plans call for a more than 23,000-square-foot, two-story restaurant with multiple bars, dining and lounge areas, beer garden, arcade and bowling alley.

Included in the design of the complex will be 49 off-street parking spaces that will be accessible from Broadway.

The beer garden would feature both outdoor seating and a sheltered bar area, landscaped with tree-shaded seating, an area for games and a bocce court.

The outdoor bar pavilion would feature two long tables plus a bar with seating for 14 and two bathrooms. The perimeter would be bordered by iron fencing.

Plans for the main building include a foyer, vestibule entrance, multiple dining areas and a central kitchen. On one side of the kitchen is a whiskey bar with a large dining and lounge area, while on the opposite would be a tequila bar with small lounge space.

Restrooms would be located at the rear of the structure, with a small darts room in the back corner of the first floor. Upstairs, plans call for a small billiards room, central bowling alley, private dining and events space, and additional restrooms. At the front of the property, existing signage will be repurposed.

Goodfellas representatives declined to comment at this time.

Goodfellas Pizzeria operates locations in Lexington, Covington, Ky., Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Bloomington, Ind.

The casual restaurants bill themselves as being “a Slice of New York City,” focusing on New York-style pizza, calzones and subs. Signature pizzas reflect the New York theme, with names like the Don, Wiseguy, Fuhgetaboutit, the Bootlegger and others. Pizzas can be purchased by the pie or by the slice.
