Kroger has decided to change things up with its annual Pappy Van Winkle lottery. Instead of giving Louisvillians a week to fill out a lucky ticket, folks have one day, or more specifically, four hours to enter a chance to purchase one of six Van Winkle brands.
Entries will only be accepted for the Pappy lottery on Black Friday, Nov. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. at any of the 17 Kroger Wine & Spirits Shops in the area (and a total of 47 stores statewide). You can only enter once per store, and the drawing will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.
“This is an incredible opportunity we wanted to offer our customers,” says Erin Grant, corporate affairs manager for the Louisville Division, in a news release. “Pappy is rich in lore, scandal and history. Each Kentucky Wine & Spirits Shop will only receive a few of these highly coveted bottles.”
Available to the lucky winners will be Old Rip Van Winkle (10 Year), Van Winkle Special Reserve (12 Year), Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 Year, Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 Year, Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23 Year and Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye (13 Year).
Respectively, those prices will be: $59.99, $69.99, $89.99, $149.99, $229.99 and $99.99.
Each location will have a minimum of three bottles, and there is no guarantee which year will be at which store. You must be at least 21 to enter.
On the Van Winkle website, Julian and Preston Van Winkle address the issue of why their bourbon is so hard to find.
“First, the whiskey is very good. When something is good, you naturally tell others about it. Word of mouth is priceless,” they write. “Another contributing factor was joining the Sazerac/Buffalo Trace family. This merger spread knowledge of our brand way beyond Kentucky and into other major markets.”
While the price of Pappy has skyrocketed at some local liquor stores and (illegally) on secondary markets, the prices Kroger is charging is on point with what the Van Winkles suggest, and in some cases, even cheaper.
