Topgolf will swing into Louisville sooner than most expected, thanks to a partnership with Sullivan’s Tap House. The two will open Topgolf Swing Suite at the St. Matthews bar and restaurant sometime this summer.
The international entertainment complex Topgolf, of course, is slated to bring one of its popular entertainment complexes to town just down the road from Sullivan’s at Oxmoor Center Mall after recently winning a court case attempting to stop it. Barring an appeal in the case — which still could happen — the development will happen sometime within the next year.
Meanwhile, Topgolf Swing Suite would provide a preview of sorts as a partnership between the entertainment company and the locally owned bar. According to a news release, the new feature at Sullivan’s would include a simulator bay with a variety of virtual games, including Hockey Shots, Baseball Pitching Carnival Classic, the popular Topgolf game Zombie Dodgeball and plenty more.
The suite also will offer TVs for sports with food and beverage service, along with lounge seating for up to eight people. The bay will be located in the front of the restaurant and bar, facing Shelbyville Road, and the 2,000-square-foot space will hold up to 100 people for events. The space will be available for both private and corporate use.
Sullivan’s opened in the location in 2017; previously, the spot had been home to the original Bluegrass Brewing Company, and the front area had been used for the brewing system.
Matt Taylor, who owns Sullivan’s Tap House with partners Breno Giacomini and John Sullivan, told Insider that the promise of Topgolf opening a new facility nearby provided motivation to add the attraction, but it wasn’t absolute in the decision.
“Yes and no,” Taylor said, asked if adding the Topgolf Swing Suite was directly tied to the Topgolf entertainment complex and the court’s decision.
“We had discussed it and said we were probably going to do it anyway. We were just trying to get it done with Topgolf, honestly. It was definitely a process to get the deal done, but we’re glad we did.”
Taylor said he, Giacomini and Sullivan had traveled to New Jersey and decided to check out what was the first Topgolf Swing Suite. That experience was more instrumental in the decision to move forward.
“We thought, ‘Even if Topgolf doesn’t come, there’s nothing else like it in St. Matthews, so this will work either way.'”
The main Topgolf development became a controversy in the Hurstbourne neighborhood behind Oxmoor last year, with residents filing a pair of lawsuits that culminated into a single court case as of January. A Jefferson District Court judge ruled last month in favor of the gaming company, and destruction will begin soon at the former Sears at Oxmoor to make way for the development.
Until that complex is built, however, gaming and golf fans will have the Swing Suite to get by with.
“We are proud to team with Sullivan’s to provide a new kind of interactive social experience that will entertain visitors of all ages and skill levels in Louisville,” said Topgolf Swing Suite President Ron Powers in a news release. “Powered by industry-leading Full Swing simulators, games are designed for both non-golfers and golfers alike, so everyone can have a great time.”
Taylor said the target open date for Topgolf Swing Suite is Aug. 19. Booking for Topgolf Swing Suite is available now by contacting Sullivan’s at [email protected]. Sullivan’s Tap House is located at 3929 Shelbyville Road.
