A partial bridge closure will likely result in heavier traffic this week for people driving through Spaghetti Junction.

The Ohio River Bridges Project issued an alert Friday that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Walsh Construction crews will be performing surface work on the new Abraham Lincoln Bridge. According to the alert, some areas of the bridge surface are not wearing as expected and must be replaced.

The work will force the closure of two northbound lanes of Interstate 65 on the bridge, leaving only the left lane open to traffic this weekend. The two lanes will close at 9 p.m. Friday, and will reopen around 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19.

Related closures Friday through Monday include:

  • One lane of Interstate 65 northbound from Muhammad Ali Boulevard to the bridge
  • The ramp from Interstate 64 westbound/Interstate 71 southbound to Interstate 65 northbound

Starting around 9 p.m. Saturday, Interstate 64 westbound will be reduced to one lane from Third Street to Mellwood Avenue, according to the Ohio River Bridges Project. The lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

Also, next Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be “rolling closures” project-wide to fill potholes. For the latest traffic information and more details on the Ohio River Bridges Project, visit

After years of bridge construction-related traffic and closures, Louisville is in the home stretch. The downtown crossing will be substantially complete by December.

Of course, around that same time, Kentucky and Indiana will start collecting tolls on the Abraham Lincoln Bridge and John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge to help pay for the $2.3 billion transportation project.

Drivers are encouraged to create an account with RiverLink, the all-electronic tolling system. Registered drivers receive a discount on the tolls for each bridge crossing. The toll is $2 for registered passenger vehicles and $4 for unregistered passenger vehicles.
