Since the Louisville burlesque group Va Va Vixens has been together, way back in 2009, attempting a rendition of “The Wizard of Oz” has been somewhat of a Bucket List goal.

Now that their home base has come together and their talented crew is at the top of their game, it’s time to jump into the world of “Va Va Vizard of Voz,” which opens Friday, Feb. 8, at Art Sanctuary and continues through Valentine’s Day weekend.

Of course, this is the Vixens’ own take on the classic story, so it’s best if you go in with an open mind.

“A few things you will notice is that we actually have two evil witches instead of just one ‘wicked witch,’ and our Dorothy is from Kentucky, and we will be visiting ‘VixenLand,’ explains Vixens manager and producer Lisa Frye. “There are many more surprises. We have also updated a few themes and crafted the story to bring it more into modern times.”

The two-and-a-half-hour show will feature 20 performers including singers, dancers, aerialists, a guitarist and more.

The burlesque troupe used to perform at Headliners Music Hall while Art Sanctuary was being renovated, but now that the project is complete, they’ve returned home to the giant stage and new technology that helps create landscapes with projection and lighting, says Frye.

Since this is burlesque we’re talking about here, and it is Valentine’s month, you also can expect the characters to fall more on the sexy side of the spectrum.

“We even created a brand new character just to bring in some romance,” adds Frye. “Her name is Shabina, which means ‘eye of the storm.’ You won’t want to miss her.”

Frye says the Vixens have been preparing on the show for months, and she’s excited to bring their hard work to the stage for both newbies and regulars. Besides, it’s the perfect place to bring a date or go with a group of friends if you’re flying solo.

“As producer, it is the culmination of all elements coming together to create the perfect version of what we have all put our minds, hearts, bodies and souls into creating,” says Frye. “Our shows are very much a group effort, and it shows. The creativity in ‘Vizard of Voz’ is awe-inspiring.”
